Detox Center: The complexity of addictions
Many people have only an addiction but a set of addictions. Indeed, some addictions seem to go together. Sex addiction is often associated with alcohol and drug abuse. Similarly, anorexics and bulimics usually have addiction to exercise. Some uncontrolled spenders are workaholics, and players often overeat. An addiction appears to promote another.
As are finding more and more people, ending an addiction does not “cure” other automatically, in fact, usually produce the emergence of a new one. In detox centers we see every day. The problem is not always the element of mood altering itself. For far too long we have blamed themselves for drug addiction. We wanted to believe that just get rid of drugs, making them inaccessible-would solve the problem. But the fact that we are becoming addicted to activities that do not involve the use of chemicals, such as shopping, working or television shows that can not be solely the chemical action of a drug addiction that causes us.
Nor can we continue to consider that addiction is caused solely by the desire to avoid withdrawal. This concept led to brief detoxification programs, in which patients had abstained from drugs and within days they were sent home “cured”. It was thought that all I had to do was an addict to stop using the drug and complete the withdrawal process, and that it would overcome addiction.

But recovery from addiction requires more than simply disrupt habitual behavior. It is related to changing lifestyle and attitude more than anything else. By lifestyle we mean what is worldview (belief system), how to approach problems and to what extent is able to meet their emotional, social and spiritual. In other words, when we let go of an addiction will be only to fall into another-or backsliding on that, unless we begin to change the way we live.
All addictions-however different they may seem at first glance, have more in common than differences among themselves. Are different versions of the same phenomenon. In other words, it’s all the same disease.
So what is the common denominator in each case of addiction? There is a particular chemical, or the fact that it causes withdrawal symptoms or how that affects the brain. All these factors vary considerably from one addiction to another. But which is present in all cases of addiction is the addict!. It is our dis-ease restlessness inside-our-what makes us so vulnerable to addictions and substances or activities themselves. The real cause of the addiction lies within us.
That is so even when addicts are turning to positive activities, such as meditation, exercise or healthy eating, may end up doing that in an uncontrolled way too. People who have a predisposition to addictive disease can become addicted to almost anything. Until we create a less addictive lifestyle for ourselves (which is a process that lasts a lifetime), we will remain vulnerable.
Detoxification Center CITA: Addiction inside us
Part of the circumstance of having a dis-ease addictive means that certain harbor contradictory beliefs that promote inner conflicts and struggles, as at the same time believe that we are not enough and that we should be perfect. Or believe that we should be able to control everything, but feel totally powerless to manage our life. Having a bad-be addictive also means being unable to tolerate frustration and demand immediate gratification, lack the capacity to cope with crises and common processes of life and not having enough support from others or from ourselves .
There are five main factors (in addition to genetic predisposition in the case of some chemical dependencies) that put people at high risk of using a drug or activity to change mood, to get it a pleasurable effect and to feel compelled to repeat over and over again:
- Addictive belief system
- addictive personality
- Inadequate capacity to cope with things
- Emotional and social needs unmet
- Lack of social supports
