Gambling Addiction Treatment

Gambling treatment starts by aknowledging the problem. Since gambling is often associated with denial, the patients often deny their illness and balk at the idea of getting professional help.

Gambling problems

The majority of gamblers enter treatment due to pressure from others to do so, rather than voluntarily admitting to having a problem and seeking help. But this is a fundamental step beginning the moment when one becomes aware of their actions and their results.
Gambling has become a growing problem worldwide. New forms of gambling have created new addictions. The essence of the problem hasn’t changed and it has become easier and easier to access many different kinds of games and gambling sites than ever before.

Causes, incidence and risk factor

Gambling problems generally appear at the beginning of adolescence in men and between 20 and 40 years old in women.

Gambling often involves repetitive behaviour. People suffering from this problem often have problems with controlling or resisting the urge to gamble, and although gambling shares some characteristics with obessive-compulsive disorder, it is a different condition.

Treatment of gambling

The treatment of a gambling problem starts by acknowledging the problem. Since gambling is often associated with denial of the problem, the patients often deny their illness and balk at the idea of getting professional help.

Prognosis of ludomania

Just like alcoholism or drug addiction, gambling is a chronic condition that tends to worsen without treatment. Even with treatment, it is not uncommon for the patient to start gambling again (relapse). Nonetheless, ludomaniacs have a positive prognosis if they receive the right treatment.

Prevention

Being exposed to gambling can increase the risk of ludomania, and limiting the exposure can limit the risk for those predisposed to gambling. Nonetheless, public exposure to gambling is increasing in the form of lottery, Internet bets and casinos. A timely intervention at the onset of the first symptoms can prevent the deterioration of the disorder.
