Shopping Addiction

A shopaholic can only find satisfaction in consumption. This addiction has serious economic and psychological consequences. Understand it. Consider these tips and do not fall into the trap of compulsive consumption.

  1. Acknowledge that you have a problem
If buying has become a pattern in your life, you have a problem. If you feel an irresistible urge to buy whatever comes your way and then your ensuing feelings are of anxiety and guilt, you need to acknowledge that you suffer from an addiction to shopping.
To recognize it is the first big step on the way to solve this addiction.
  2. Learn to make a difference between what you want and what you need
People with this addiction, delude themselves in believing that they really need this or that thing. However you can ask yourself before making the purchase: do I really need this? When will I use it ? Do I have something similar? This becomes a way of controlling your addiction by demonstrating that you do not need everything you see.
  3. Learn to distinguish your moments of vulnerability
The place from which you seek to do your compulsive shopping is always emptiness. Be honest with yourself and learn to distinguish when this compulsive feeling of buying arises, try to get to the bottom of the issue and develop what you can to control it.
  4. Reduce the chances of tempting yourself
There are many strategies you can take to safeguard yourself from temptations that the market puts in your way. Take just enough money for what you want to buy, try to buy while accompanied, avoid offers and sales and do not use credit cards among other tips.
  5. Needs list
When you decide to buy something, be clear about what you really need, to avoid unnecessary expenses. Before leaving, make an objective list.
  6. Keep track of your daily expenses
If not done it yet, carry a monthly spreadsheet: with your fixed expenses, your income, your ability to save money and with the money you have to buy extras. This control will help you be much more realistic when you go shopping and will help you avoid going into debt.
  7. Seek professional help
If you are not able to control a type of behaviour. If shopping disempowerment takes you to a level of anxiety that you cannot dominate, you should consider seeing a professional to help you.

Shopping addiction, like all addictions is extremely harmful. If you identify with or find these features in a loved one, do not hesitate to ask for help.
