Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is an addiction?

  • What are the different types of addiction?

    Drug addictions

Substances that breed addiction include, among others, alcohol, amphetamines, benzodiazepines, cannabis, cocaine, nicotine (tobacco), opiates (heroin), and other emerging drugs such as hallucinogenic mushrooms, ecstasy, and derivatives. , tryptamines and ketamine.

    Behavioural addictions

Within this type of addiction are those that are linked to compulsive-obsessive behaviour. It is possible to develop a dependency on sex, on gambling (also known as pathological gambling), on new technologies, on shopping, or on work.

    Dual pathology

Dual pathology is when one or more addictions coexist with a mental disorder. In addition, with substance abuse, it is common to find disorders such as anxiety, psychotic disorders, and schizophrenia.

  • How can addiction be overcome?

Recognizing the problem and asking for outside help are the first two key steps toward recovering from any type of addiction. This includes anything from substance abuse such as alcoholism, cocaine, or marijuana addictions, to behavioural dependencies, like sex or technology addictions.

It is necessary to communicate the problem in a familiar space, to let family and friends know, and at the same time to enlist the assistance of expert doctors and addiction psychologists. The guidance from a professional does not imply weakness, but deep self-knowledge that will result in a healthy, full, and balanced life.

At CITA Clinics, the rehabilitation program always begins with a detailed evaluation of the patient. In this way, we can develop an individual strategy that allows us to adapt treatment to the particular circumstances of the addiction.

The path to recovery for an addicted patient varies from case-to-case. For example, quitting alcohol may require a different approach to quitting cocaine. Dr Josep M. Fàbregas, director psychiatrist and addiction expert of the CITA medical team, divides our therapeutic program into three phases: Detoxification, Habit-Breaking and Rehabilitation.

    Detoxification Phase

Drug addiction treatment must be started forcefully by ceasing consumption immediately. Symptoms of alcohol or drug dependence will appear a few hours later.

It is important that a medical specialist in drug addictions, like those working at CITA Clinics, therapeutically assist the patient through a multidisciplinary approach from the initial diagnosis, with the support of symptom-appropriate medications.

In this phase, the symptoms that the patient experiences due to the suspension of substance intake are treated. As such, problems relating to insomnia, anxiety, and fluctuating energy levels will be solved.

    Habit-Breaking Phase

The next therapeutic phase after overcoming the “cold-turkey” withdrawal symptoms is the phase of cessation. According to CITA Clinics addiction psychologists, you should focus on the harmful effects on your own physical, psychological and spiritual health, examining the problem that led to consumption.

We have individual treatments and collective therapies because participation in different groups will be of great help to the patient. Recovery is not only solved by eliminating the drug from the body but by developing valuable human connections.

    Reintegration phase

During the last phase of treatment, we incorporate the psychological issues which led the patient to addiction. At this time, it is important to analyze the environment of the person and his or her family.

After overcoming detoxification and drug rehabilitation, the issues associated with consumption that generate anxiety, depression or chronic stress are treated.

We work on overcoming the fear of habit and lifestyle change with multidisciplinary education on how to have better interpersonal relationships.

At CITA Clinics the rehabilitation program always begins with a detailed and individual evaluation of the patient. Thus we can develop an individual strategy adapted to your particular circumstances.

  • What does addiction treatment consist of?

At Cita clinics we have a wide range of techniques focused on rehabilitation:

    • Various detox centres adapted to different types of patients
    • Immersion into a quiet and natural environment

    • Outdoor and couples therapy
    • Physiotherapy sessions
    • Family interventionists
    • On-site or on-line follow-up after leaving the centre
  • How long does the treatment last?

The treatment of addictions does not have a specified duration since it depends on the case and the needs of each patient. However, the goal of all treatment is to achieve recovery with a short and effective treatment.

  • The Price of Treatment

The rates for admission to the rehabilitation centre starts at 99 Euros, and all program plans include access to individual sessions with psychiatrists, psychologists and sociotherapists, 18 groups/workshops per week, gym, horse riding, spinning classes, racquetball, tennis, and swimming pool.

We also include additional services such as physical therapy, hairdressing and barber services, dentistry, carers, and everything else the patient needs. For the city of Barcelona, there is also an outpatient (or non-admittance) treatment option from 75 euros per visit.

Our rates are estimations since they are set on a case by case basis.

  • Admittance to the Centre

Arrival at the centre – First day

A specialised sociotherapist from the centre will receive the patient to facilitate their integration into the clinic. From that moment on, there will be daily communication between the patient, their family, and the personal professional assigned to them. Our centres ensure quality, privacy and anonymity.

    During the Stay

A personalized work program will be established with:

    • Specialised psychiatrists and psychologists
    • Therapies
    • Workshops

Additionally, thanks to the surrounding nature, excellent facilities, and the pioneers in EAP we have on staff, we are able to provide Equine Assisted Psychotherapy which improves non-verbal communication and self-awareness, thus accelerating the rehabilitation process. You can check out all our facilities and services here.

    Objectives of Admission

Admission to the centre guarantees the patient:

    • Separation from the circumstances that led to the addiction
    • Self-awareness and improvement of the ability to manage emotions
    • Resolving behavioural problems related to substance abuse or behavioural addiction
    • Improved quality of life for both the patient and their families

    After Discharge

Reintegration will be carried out in a gradual and personalized way until the patient is able to fully recover.

For patients residing in Barcelona, we have a psychological centre that specializes in addiction.

Those residing out of Barcelona will have at their disposal a wide network of centres and affiliates both at a national and European level. In addition, there is also the option of online therapy which gives access to a multidisciplinary team made up of psychiatrists, psychologists, doctors, coaching experts, and educators.

  • Requirements for Addiction Treatment to Work

The requirements for addiction treatment to work begins with the patient’s willingness to engage with treatment. In other words, the patients themselves must want to recover.

Second, the person must break with the environment that has provoked their addiction. This phase must be carried out in conjunction with professionals and under appropriate medical supervision.

In addition, at CITA Clinics, the phases of detoxification and habit-breaking will be carried out as distinct multidisciplinary therapies, since it is necessary to differentiate withdrawal symptoms and urges from the fundamental desire to intoxicate oneself.

Finally, in the rehabilitation phase, the person recognizes the emptiness left by the drug or addiction in question and overcomes it.

This process requires you, the patient, with the support of therapists, to invest a lot of energy, responsibility and commitment to yourself, and above all, your family. Without these elements, the treatment will not be effective in the long term and the chances of relapse increase.

Attending sessions with therapists allows you to analyze which “people, places and settings” are linked and related to your use. You will thus be able to detect the patterns of alcohol or drug-use that tend to have repetitive mechanisms over time. Once these 3 factors have been identified, you will already be in a position to develop methods and action-plans to change the cycle of addictive behaviour for your own benefit.

Addiction Treatment: How does it work?

The treatment of drug addictions is most effective when a comprehensive and global approach is applied.  Dr Josep M. Fàbregas, director of psychiatry and the CITA medical team’s addiction expert, outlines the therapeutic program’s three phases as Detoxification, Habit-Breaking, and Rehabilitation.

To achieve recovery when suffering from addiction, it is important to solve some of the problems central to dependence which every person must address to recover:

Drug addiction treatment must be started forcefully by ceasing consumption immediately. Symptoms of alcohol or drug dependence will appear a few hours later and it is important for a medical specialist in drug addictions, like those working at CITA Clinics, to therapeutically support the patient through a multidisciplinary approach from the initial diagnosis, with the support of symptom-appropriate medications.

In this phase, the symptoms caused by completely stopping the use of the substance are treated. The patient’s nervous system and body have been abused by the drug and must recover. In this way, insomnia, anxiety and instability in energy levels will be solved. This phase is known as the detoxification phase..

The next therapeutic phase, after overcoming the withdrawal symptoms, is thehabit-breaking phase.According to the CITA  addiction psychologists you should focus on the damaging effects the drug has had on your own physical, psychological and spiritual health, and focus on the problem that led to consumption.

To do this, at CITA we offer individual and collective treatments since participation in different group activities will be of great help. Recovery is not only solved by eliminating the drug from the body but also by developing valuable and meaningful human connections.

Thirdly, and last of all, is the reintegration phase.. During the final phase of  addiction treatment,we address the psychological and functional issues that are closest to the patient and, importantly, the family.

After overcoming detoxification and drug rehabilitation, the problems that generate anxiety, depression or chronic stress associated with consumption are treated. The fear of changing habits and lifestyle will be overcome and a knowledge of how to create better interpersonal relationships will be delivered through a multidisciplinary education.

It should be noted that the treatment of addictive behaviours cannot be completed by stopping consumption alone. Carrying out fulltime treatment with a therapeutic approach, such as that offered by admittance into the CITA Addiction Centre, is the most effective short-term solution.

Treatment of behavioural addictions

There is a specific process for the treatment of behavioural addictions. These types of addictions have been increasing in recent years and require a specific approach to treatment, distinct from substance addictions.

The basis of addiction treatment

Addiction is, in a sense, both a disease and a symptom. When someone becomes an addict, the addiction is itself a pathology with physical and psychological consequences. However, the presence of the addiction also shows there to be an underlying problem: a void.

It is this void that the individual has tried to fill by resorting to substance use or behaviour that, over the long-term, has degenerated into a compulsive action that they are no longer able to control.

Drug treatment  in CITA clinics takes into account this dynamic, which is why it goes beyond the essential detoxification, and even de-addiction, as it points to the need to treat the root of the problem. That lack that is at the very base of the problem. To solve it we turn to a combination of psychiatry, psychology and sociotherapy, as well as a broad selection of activities and alternative therapies.

To treat drug addictions, we follow the same foundations used to tackle behavioural and other types of addictions. Treating drug addictions is easier when you have a specialised drug addiction and rehabilitation team.

Our experience has shown us that the combination of these therapeutic models constitutes the best way to eliminate addiction, in addition to overcoming the specific problem, they give the patient the tools needed to manage the addictive behaviour itself.

Individualized drug rehabilitation treatment

In spite of this in-depth explanation that illustrates the basic steps of the therapeutic model we use at CITA, in our centre, we believe that quality treatment should also support individualization.

El Drug treatment  is extremely complex because, on the one hand, it is affected by the wide variety of substances and behaviours that can envoke addiction. As we pointed out before, a dependency is a problem in itself while dependence on a specific substance is still, at least in part, the externalization of another underlying problem:  addiction itself.

On the other hand, the need to carry out a psychological treatment forces us to face an almost infinite hurdle: that human beings vary enormously. Each individual is different and, so too, is each patient. Seldom do two patients reach the same dependency because of the same motivations. Not everyone has come to the same place looking for the same thing and not all will find the same results. Different paths and different questions require different answers.

Tratamiento de rehabilitación de drogas

CITA’s rehabilitation program always starts with a detailed individual evaluation of the patient. This allows us to develop a personal strategy that furthers a process adapted to their particular circumstances. We work on the basis that each patient is different and only through a response tailored to their needs can the objective be achieved: a comprehensive and absolute rehabilitation.

At CITA, each addicted patient’s path to recovery is designed according to the needs of their case.
